Don’t just sit there!
Increasingly the workplace involves sitting for long periods as technology takes the physical out of our labour. Many of us now spend most of the working day sitting at a desk working on a computer. This has further increased with a significant increase in home working, often in makeshift home office spaces. Additionally, when sitting in virtual meetings staring at a screen we move even less than when sitting in meetings in person.
Although increased flexibility in our working patterns may make life easier, sitting for long periods leads to a decrease in flexibility in the body. The human body is designed to move and is essential wellbeing and optimal performance. Reduced movement can result in a decrease in mobility, poor circulation, joint pain and can negatively effect posture. Movement also helps break down build up in cortisol, the stress hormone, movement is good for the body and the mind.
The good news is even relatively small movements can make a big difference. A lot can be achieved sitting at your desk.
Mindful Impact have developed Desk based Yoga and mindful movement designed for the workplace and Mark as been delivering sessions since 2020. Sessions include gentle twists, stretches and bends with a focus on reducing tension in the neck, shoulders and lower body. Can also include movements to reduce strain in the hands, wrists an fingers. Longer sessions include bringing movement to the legs, ankles and feet.
Our chair based yoga and mindful movement sessions typically last for 30 minutes but can range from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. As they are delivered virtually they can e designed around your business needs and delivered at a time that works best for you.
